ESPN, Coward of the Year

It’s been quite the rollercoaster of events these past couple of weeks, with Nazis openly marching in the streets, a self identified anti-fascist group employing their own fascist techniques to shut them up, historical statues and monuments vandalized by mobs and a president who has not yet learned that how and when you say something is just as important as what is being said.

Taken individually, these things are not yet cause for too much alarm.  The majority of the country soundly rejects Nazism and white supremacists, is appalled by mobs tearing down statues and is waking up to the violent tactics of groups like Antifa.  Collectively though, they are symptoms of much a greater problem; one whose essence is captured in a seemingly small event.

You may have heard that ESPN has taken sports announcer Robert Lee off the job of covering the University of Virginia’s opening football game next month.  Yes, you read that correctly, the ESPN Powers That Be thinks the general public might mistake a very much alive Asian man with a very dead and long buried Confederate General, thus risking a backlash.

As per ESPN Spokesman, Derek Volner:

“We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name.”

On the face of it, this seems like just another case of corporate stupidity, an extreme example of executive CYAism destined to morph in to a scathingly funny Saturday Night Live skit.

Dig deeper though and it’s not so humorous. Apparently there were concerns for Mr. Lee’s safety, which can only mean a few scenarios.

  1. We’ve reached such a state of absurdity in this country that just sharing a name with a controversial figure is enough to make people worry about a backlash.
  2. ESPN received pressure from sponsors and/or the professionally aggrieved to drop Mr. Lee.
  3. Or, even worse, there actually were violent threats made against him and the station.

So no matter how you slice it, ESPN has taken the route of self censure by sidelining a perfectly capable and loyal employee out of fear.  Perhaps fear for his very life, for sure fear of being labeled racist and causing a national ruckus and absolutely out of fear of losing advertising dollars.

Instead of sticking up for Mr. Lee, beefing up security and publicly berating the noxious thinking that led to his reassignment, the network took a dive and caved.  All done preemptively mind you, because of what the corporate suits thought might happen.

It’s a sick spirit that causes this; one of defeat and keeping your head down, where truth continually gets sacrificed on the altar of political correctness because playing it safe is paramount.  It’s what allows bad events and people to thrive and turn in to larger movements because good people have been conditioned to say nothing.  Don’t you know, life is easier when you don’t speak out?

This sickness is  more evil than words or even violence because it affixes to the heart and warps the way a person thinks.  It also spreads very easily.

This keeps me up at night.

    Good stuff tricia.

Stupidity. Sickness. Evil. Uh, yes ma’am as you say.

When I fist heard this, I thought it was a joke, but nooooooo, and the more people try to defend it, the uglier it gets. If espn would have said nothing, it would have been a non issue.

But like most things political, they must insert themselves into the mainstream. Truly a mental disorder of sorts. We may as well apologize to floor jacks because the Ripper roamed England.

I was thinking this morning how the human mind has devolved, and every day it adds to warp speed. Tkx for taking the trouble to say it as it is.

Yesterday my stepson told me this, and I told him he was believing fake news. Ugh, turns out he was NOT. This surely would have been a chance for ESPN to stand and take the chance to confront such rank stupidity. They chose not to, which makes them just as rankly stupid as all of the people with their drawers in a was about any words that aren’t exactly perfect(in their eyes.)

I suppose me calling them morons is politically incorrect as it is offensive to morons.

Not to mention that from now on This Robert Lee will always be connected to this event. His life has changed to a footnote because ESPN, besides being cowardly, is just plain stupid. When they were covering sports they were the best. Now that they are doing political commentary instead, they are classless and boring.

So true Al and I really hope Robert Lee can propel this in to an even better gig.

ESPN has let politics take precedence over decent sports coverage. Their tanking viewer numbers and advertising dollars show this.

  4. This is the stuff of fiction—something good ol George O would have written about and I would have had to read the book in high school…laughing to myself that “oh we’d never get to that point…”
and then I’d wake up from my Dallas dream scenario and realize that I’m not back in high school in the early 70’s having to read crazy books for lit class, that I’d quit watching junk like Dallas in college and that oddly I’m no longer laughing because this is the reality of our world.
It is the most asinine thing that I ever have heard…well, asinine for the past couple of days.

Who in the hell would associate the fact that this young man of Asian decent with the last name Lee, who’s parents happened to name him Robert, would ever think there was some sort of Confederate connection and would therefore be of concern???!!

Or that ESPN would make the excuse that they are “worried” for his safety when calling games in places such a Charlottesville, etc using his actual name—-

This is not the stuff of George Orwell but rather the stuff of pure lunatics!!!!

  5. The white supremacist “movement” is minuscule.

And the Antifa is bought and paid for by the Swamp.

America, at its core is still very Christian, very quite and long suffering.

Sports in general have become emblematic of everything that’s wrong with our culture. They’re all sort of a mix between Trash Culture, Political Correctness, Hollywood-level fakery: drugs, scandal, and big money. I used to like (and even play) football and baseball. Now I can’t stand them. I end up going to Youtube instead and watching games from years ago when it was still about sportsmanship and teamwork.

    • And now we have protestors demanding that an overpaid little boy be given a job as the protestors feel he was not picked up due to his disrespectful and highly unpatriotic and highly unprofessional shenanigans
As they are now trying to tell a business who they can and can’t hire– never thinking that perhaps there are better players available– sigh

I know exactly what you mean Night Wind. I don’t follow professional sports much because of this, I watch or go to a game now for more social reasons. Amateur games are still fun though, the players have not yet been corrupted!

Well said Tricia. Were I an ESPN viewer or even were I a sports fan, I think I would be incensed at the assumption that I was so very stupid.

Right on the mark Tricia and the comments are very good also.
I heard today that ESPN said Robert Lee ASK to be removed from the game. They are laying his removal at his feet rather then theirs.I don’t believe this for a second. The first story out was the way it happened and ESPN is just trying to save face by catering to the Antifa and then getting heat for their stupidity that they blamed it on Lee.
I have read a number of reports indicating the Antifa are funded by Soros and the lefties in D,C.
If some of these idiots would read the history of Gen Robert E. Lee they would see that he was not the man the haters are trying to make us believe he was.
The Civil War was not about freeing the slaves but about states rights and having the ability to leave the Union of states. Abe Lincoln freed the slaves and Abe was a Republican (actually the first R to be president).
Democrats fought to keep the blacks in near slavery by passing poll tax Jim crow laws and backing the KKK. People need to read history.

I aree Dennis that ESPN is trying to save face by blaming Lee. The thing is I don’t even think Anitfa or any other groups were pressuring them, I believe they took it upon themselves to just self censure.

Yeah the Confederate Robert Lee has a complex history and the “good and “bad” guys are not always so black and white. Judgements should be made in the context of the times people lived in but so many don’t know their history or they do know but just don’t care.

      Thanks for coming by!

It is just the more of the Puppet show, an orchestrated show. It is all just a silly movie and understand it is just to control the narrative. The real story behind everything will never be in the media.

  10. Chris Warren says:

If ESPN was doing this solely for the safety of Robert Lee (the sportscaster), then they could have simply assigned him to another event and not said anything. Instead they chose to grandstand and manufacture an issue, thereby assuring the decision would get ten million times more attention than it would have otherwise. ESPN, like the rest of the media, is lying. This change was social commentary/pandering/political correctness and nothing more.

So true Chris! Nothing more yes, topically, but beneath the surface in my view it reveals the rot that the PCness of the last decade has had on people’s thought process. It’s now not enough to respond to actual events i the “right” way, but you must do the “right” thing even before something happens. This scares me.

      Thanks for coming by. 🙂

Antifa and the liberal left, comprised of a number of groups,is the umbrella that covers and is responsible for all these anti everything that they don’t agree with. Even when they get what they want they are not happy. These people are domestic terrorists and need to be dealt with thru law enforcement. It’s a crime to tear down a statue that is on and owned by the city. Of course the taxpayers will pick up the tab which is the liberal way of doing things.

This is really interesting (and sad) Tricia. ESPN is not available in Canada as cable so it did not make the news up here that I am aware of. Even if a person were to get an ESPN app for my computer there would be a geo-block where access is denied because of my location.

I did find this a little bit shocking on the part of ESPN and am wondering how this will affect Robert Lee. Will it destroy his career or will it launch him into something that is bigger and better?

    Thank you for sharing! 🙂

I am sure everyone knows about this by now, but Tricia’s post is thoughtful.

Does some small group of Nazis marching in the streets bother you? How about Antifa fighting with Nazis or anyone they just happen to feel like shutting up? That a bit more alarming? What do you think about politicians posturing so they can display their anti-white supremacist credentials? That’s definitely worth an eye-roll, but isn’t what takes the cake when corporate execs start behaving like gutless, thoughtless, politically correct fools? Doesn’t that mean the stupidity of political correctness has become part of their business model?

When businessmen make absurdly foolish decisions based upon an insane form of political correctness, that threatens both our freedom and the economic health of our country. So this is not something we want to mainstream.

If everyone ignored the nazis in Charlottesville, there would not have been a tragedy and disunity in our nation.

  16. My wife and I went to the movies last night. My wife brought a large purse with her. The ticket attendant asked to “scan” her bag. My wife complied. The next woman was put through the same process. She and her husband complained about racial profiling and how ridiculous this “racial” search was. My wife walked up to the woman and quietly explained she was required to undergo the same type of search. The search was a security search of ALL purses and backpacks intended to PROTECT the consumers based on current times. Nothing was going to appease this individual.

Legitimate stress based on terrorism, hatred, and disunity is causing severe breakdown in REALITY. Neurotic reflexes are replacing rational objectivity. This is a very dangerous path we cannot afford to apathetically follow. If we do not CHOOSE to find common ground to reverse this trend, we may ultimately loose sight of what differentiates this country with the rest of the world and allow ourselves to implode.

We went down a similar path in the 1960’s. We would be foolish to assume recovery is the natural course of events. It requires a change in attitude and a willingness to give each other the benefit of the doubt FIRST, rather than finding fault and making unfounded accusations based on paranoia.

Jonathan, your story about your wife and the bag scan exemplifies perfectly the reason why I am so opposed to the “systemic racism” narrative that’s being forced on our culture along with the invisible “patriarchy” that many feminists like to promote as holding women back. These are poisonous thought processes that distort reality and cause suspicion for no cause and much disruption and, eventually as we have seen, violence.

You are very right that we need to CHOOSE to find common ground and give each other the benefit of the doubt. This is unlikely to happen any time soon.

I don’t know why ESPN was worried, haven’t they seen the Jesse Watters man-on-the-street interviews? I’d be surprised if the majority of the country even knows who General Lee was.
