Is the smell of tyranny in the air here in America? Or is that just more mad ramblings from the conspiracy minded muh freedumb crowd, a group I consider myself a proud, card carrying member of by the way.
Tyranny can be difficult to imagine in our modern culture because it brings up images of things that happened a long time ago and far away; the Stasi secret Police banging on doors in East Germany, or the Russian KGB disappearing people in the middle of the night or China subjecting outspoken dissidents to forced organ donation and/or horrible beatings. Actually this still happens in China.
But in today’s America? I argue yes, not only is tyranny alive and well here on our Western shores, but thriving. Mind you, I’m not expecting a knock at the door in the middle of the night (not yet anyway), but the amount of government control over nearly aspect of our lives has grown tremendously over the last few decades. This, combined with the public’s incessant need for safetyism and an enormous deep state filled with unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats has brought us to a dangerous tipping point.
The recent controversy over banning gas stoves is a perfect example. The push for this was hatched a few years ago by major climate action groups whose very well funded coffers flow freely to the Democratic Party. They commissioned some junk studies on gas stoves and health risks, which the press dutifully published without an ounce of critical analysis and a very naive section of the public already frightened by 3 years of Covid hysteria ate up.
Politicians of course eagerly embraced this too, using it as yet another wedge issue to beat up mean Republicans with (they want asthmatic children to die!), while raking up more campaign dollars and appearing empathetic. And don’t kid yourselves with the Biden administration’s denials on this, they really do want to take away your stoves. In fact there are already laws on the books in blue states like California and New York to prevent you from installing any type of gas appliances.
For more on Tyranny, let’s jump over to insanitybytes222 site and check out her excellent post, Tyranny is? Here IB expounds on both the political and personal ways tyranny can grow unchecked. I especially liked her tying in fear with the need for more personal control. This of course opens the door to more government involvement with the promise of increased safety. She also expounds on an awesome definition of tyranny by Citizen Tom from his equally good post, The Thoughtlessness of the Standard Liberal Democrat.
“Tyranny is making choices for others that those others have the right to make for themselves. What are those choices? In a free country we debate such matters. In a tyrannical state the tyrant decides. In a free country, we humbly admit that none of us have the either the wisdom or the right to run the lives of people who know their own situation better than we do.”
My own comment on IB’s post was that tyranny is something we should be discussing more. It’s been increasing for years here and a serious debate is long overdue. Our catastrophic pandemic response with its casual shredding of civil liberties just added jet fuel to this slow burn and has created a lingering atmosphere of oppression, which is stifling.
“It’s the threat though that the switch could flip again at any time where we find ourselves once again under new mandates that is oppressive and depressing. That is why I firmly believe that accountability for the monstrous shredding of civli liberties that occurred during Covid has to come about. Nobody who was responsible for it or who dutifully complied of course even wants to talk about it let alone expose the wrong doing and enact protocols to prevent it from happening again.”
It’s not just about the threat of reoccurring Covid mandates, although I would not rule that out. It’s that this casual dismantling of our freedoms with 0 acknowledgement from anyone involved that this was absurdly and grossly wrong, will happen again for any number of reasons. Not if, but when.
This tweet by conservative journalist Helen Andrews sums my feelings up well here:
Which brings us to the most important bulwark against a creeping and opportunistic tyranny; the people themselves. As I wrote in a post from 2016, Does Society Still Value Freedom?
“I know so many good and otherwise intelligent people that are completely willing to hand over their personal power to that inept blob of bureaucracy we call the federal government and for what? Some sense of security I suspect and the false impression that large, intrusive government programs equates to compassion.
“In reality most (programs) do not. As the government permeates in to society, the mission becomes about protecting and benefiting the managing bureaucracy and the cottage industries that support it. The needs of the people who use these programs become secondary to growing the numbers and keeping them dependent, while their self worth and initiative erodes.”
Some of us stand agog at the tyrannical nature of many politicians today and wonder how they could keep getting reelected. It’s not hard to understand though when you consider the large number of people who believe the government is keeping them safe or who are dependent on it for basic needs. It’s a form of enslavement really, of which years and years of psychological conditioning has created.
This is a big problem with no easy solutions. Neither political party is addressing it really, not in any serious way so expect more of the same nonsense in the next election.
Thank you for the kind mention, Tricia. That is a fabulous CS Lewis quote too, really horrifying because it is so true.
LOL! I also got mocked for being a member of the “muh freedumb” club. Very funny how the same talking points go out all across the country. That one however, was so pathetic, so foolish, so off the wall, I just stared at it with my mouth open. Are we seriously mocking freedom and praising bondage now?
I read a couple of mainstream media polls today and some 72% of us seem to believe our country is on the wrong track. Some 76% of us seem to believe our democracy itself is in danger. This is actually really good news as far as people waking up to reality goes. The first step is recognizing you have a problem.

Yes,Muh Freedumb club members unite, lol! I really enjoyed yours and Tom’s posts, like I said, the more tyranny is discussed, the better in my opinion.
Sorry if you got multiple notifications on this post. I was having a lot of WordPress issues today, I had to delete an already published post and re publisher it. WP is getting a little tyrannical theses days….

Liberal is a code word for communist. KKK slavery lefties celebrate Pride which is BIGOTRY, stubbornness and abject stupidity.
The world is upside down and it is blatant.

Actually, I think that they’re to the Left of Communism. You don’t see ‘pride parades and rainbow flags; CRT in schools, monuments vandalized, massive looting race-riots, tent-city bum jungles, or defunding the police in places like China, Vietnam, North Korea, Venezuela, or Cuba. At least in theory, Communism is also a Meritocracy since it’s premised on ‘from each according to his ability.’

Communism is premised on ‘from each according to his ability?’
Communism is pure tyranny and has resulted in the slaughter of over 100 million people mainly white people over the last 100 years. The only good commie is obviously a dead commie which we will see as KKK slavery lefties die of the clot shot soon. Unfortunately in our public brainwashing centers falsely called schools they teach people to be good useful idiots and not how to think in the least. Orwell’s animal farm depicts commies very well with the commie pigs who are more equal than others.
We are NOT equal as that is a farcical concept promoted to dumb people down. Communism is sold as what you described while it is based on pure HATE to control the masses, thus it is inverted to what it really is.
The commies are doing to America as we speak what the bolsheviks did to Russia 100 years ago where they murdered 66 million White Russians. Unlike other purported genocides who had survivors galore, there were NO survivors. Operation Trust to keep people at bay in Russia is no different than the psyop Q now.
To figure it out all you need to do is research who made up the ficticious RACIST term “white supremacist.” Whatever the propaganda media accuseth it is guilty as we know from the clot shot.
If you haven’t figured out everything is inverted by now, it is time you do. Calling a KKK slavery lefty liberal is completely absurd as they are closed minded BIGOTS!

Coming soon: federally-imposed rent control (the White House calls it a “non-binding Renter’s Bill of Rights”). [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btdFx0hzfHg ] This reminds me of FDR’s Economic Bill of Rights: https://fee.org/articles/how-fdrs-economic-bill-of-rights-changed-american-politics/
Trish, you and others are correct to conclude that the Covid lockdown tyranny was a test run to determine how many tyrannical state governors and health departments would help carry out the cramdown, and also to determine how many citizens are gullible sheep and how many are liberty-loving individuals.
It seems to me the tipping point has been passed, by the seeds of Jacobin-style wokeness that the Obama administration planted.
One thing that is unmistakably true is that the 3 mega-blue states (CA, NY, and IL) have a progressive codependency with the federal government. Those states get so much federally-funded pork flowed to them every fiscal year, that their state governments are almost like an extension of the federal government. CA legislators in Sacramento know very well that whatever insane environmental regulations they impose on their state will quickly become the national standard.
Very disheartening…..

Oh good Lord, the last thing this country needs is a federal rent control program, talk about putting the final nail in the coffin! You know Jeff, I had not even thought about the whole Covid tyrannical governor litmus test angle, but you are 100% spot in with this! I mean I was thinking police and military, along with the separation of sheeple from people for sure, but the governors brings things to a new dimension.
Very disheartening indeed. Thanks for coming by, hope all is well!

It is happening but not surprising. We must fight for freedom. Obama warned us he wanted to fundamentally transform America. This is the socialist game plan. I do not know if we are in the first quarter or last quarter, but I do expect a knock on the door soon.

Awesome post.
What makes this “modern” form of tyranny different from most tyrannies of the past is that we have a collusion of big corporations and goverment (big business, big pharma, big tech).
This is exemplified in the collusion of the security state with facebook, google and until recently twitter. This is textbook fascism or as Klaus Schwab calls it euphemistically, public-private partnership.
Media and the press have for the most part become propaganda organs for the goverments which share their ideology or which serve their financial interests.
You are right. The creeping tyranny was a gradual process.
However, the magical ingredient was and is fear.
The constant fearmongering with the threat of a coming climate catastrophy didn’t succeed in convincing enough people to volontarily give up their freedoms because the threat was too abstract.
Well, the threat of a deadly virus did the trick and it worked like a charm.
As the pandemic was subsiding, incidentally a new threat was emerging: a war in Ukraine.
Whether that event was planned or not is not that relevant. What is relevant is that this event was and is exploited to the fullest.
Instead of seeking a quick diplomatic solution everything was done to escalate the conflict and to ramp up fear again.
It seems to me that our goverments do everything to keep the level of fear up in order to maximize their power and control.
Like you, I don’t know all the answers but I know that as a first step we must bring down the level of fear.
We can do this by having rational discussions with as many people as possible but most importantly we can do this by setting an example in our daily lives, by not giving in to fear and panic, by showing to our fellow man that one doesn’t need to fear.
I did it as much as I could throughout the pandemic.
One day, when the goverment and media-induced panic was at its peak, I was riding my bicycle, without mask of course.
A little boy came out of a house with a mask on his face. When the boy saw me without mask, he ripped the mask off and with a big happy smile he ran away in order to play.
What a wonderful moment.
Fear and panic are infectious but so is fearlessness.

“Fear and panic are infectious but so is fearlessness.” Love this and so true! That’s a great story about the little boy and his mask.
I think what’s different about today’s fascism compared to the past is the corporations seem more than willing to allow themselves to be controlled by the government. Or maybe I’m just being naive about the money involved both now and in the past. Either way, things are not good. But, I agree, we can do what we can by trying to change the hearts and minds of the people around us every day.

Thanks. My guess is that the people leading this corporations, like the rest of society, are subject to the same influences and therefore they have a lot of woke people in these corporations. These people don’t need much convincing when the goverment wants them to do certain things.
My guess is also, that if corporations don’t want to go along., the goverment uses more persuasive methods like “Hey twitter, nice company you have here. Would be a shame if congress decides to drop section 230 and the protection it provides to big tech.”

Here’s my take on it: back in the Bush/Clinton/Obama Years, we were all told how Government was too big, too intrusive, and too inefficient. But rather than do what we should have done: elected more people to clean up corruption and minimize waste, Americans took the easy way of shifting more control to the so-called ‘Private Sector.’ Now we have ‘woke’ Corporations telling the Government what to do, the bureaucracy and regulation is just as bad except now it’s directed to private power and profit than to Party cronyism.
The gas-burning stoves are a great example. The Energy Cartels want bans on those things because reduced consumer choice gives them a bigger market concentration. Elon Musk is another good example. He donated heavily to Governors Newsome and Inslee and both signed bills phasing out gas-powered engines in favor of electric vehicles. He also donated to ex-Nevada Governor Sisolak and got a Tesla Plant in Las Vegas; as well as to ex-Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and got a fat contract for converting a transit tunnel to electric vehicles. This is repeated everywhere by Gates, Buffett, Bezos, etc. These guys spend billions on lobbying, shadow campaign-funding, and revolving-door regulators to get their agendas passed.
BlackRock holds all the debt for the bailouts and the Stimulus Checks—they certainly don’t want lower taxes on the Middle Class. Them and three other banks—all ‘woke’ WEF Partners—have combined controlling interest in every one of the S&P 500. I remember when Obama was elected, Hillary Clinton met with the top banks in the US and they handed her a list of who Obama’s appointments to key economic and regulatory agencies would be. Biden’s first appointment was making John Kerry a Special Ambassador to the WEF. BTW, Al Gore—who was one of the biggest promoters of ‘Public-Private Partnerships’ when he was VP is on the powerful WEF Board of Trustees along with the head of the EU Central Bank, Corporate Execs from BlackRock, Nestle, Siemens Energy, Royal Dutch Phillips, Salesforce, the AXA Insurance Cartel, the Carlyle Group (i.e the Bush Family), Bain Capital, Reliance Industries, Accenture IT; and Africa’s largest gold monopoly. Others on the Board include the heads of the World Bank, CERN, and the IMF along with Tiananmen Trudeau’s Deputy Prime Minister, the Queen of Jordan, and the ex-President of Singapore and the Dean of MIT. If they were an actual nation, the WEF’s combined assets are higher than the GDPs of every country except the US and China.

Most people who embrace the conspiracy theories of the extreme right leaning conservatives are always living in fear that the government is taking away their individual rights but the fact is that the great majority of people on either side of politics awoke this morning with their important freedoms still intact and operative. Nobody asked to see my “papers” today, No men in black coats took me aside for questioning, I went freely wherever I wanted to go, I said freely whatever I wanted to say, I bought what I wanted to buy, I did everything that free Americans have been doing for many decades now and I never heard a word from anybody representing the government threatening me with the loss of any of my freedoms. It was the conspiracy theorists and the anti-maskers who are responsible for hundreds of thousands of our fellow Americans dying from covid, but they will all deny their culpability because they live in an alternate universe and embrace a reality of their own construct that has nothing at all to do with the reality that affects all but about 70-million avid Trump acolytes … the greater part of the society does not embrace the senseless rantings and ravings of the right-wing extremists in America and that is a saving grace for our democracy. You can’t fix stupid so don’t even try to reason with these people because they have long since lost their ability reason.

Thank you for this comment John, it’s a good peek at the vacuous and shallow left wing intellect that so often constitutes “debate” over serious and complex issues. It really exemplifies why we are in so much trouble today as pertains to the loss of individual freedom and our continued march towards tyranny. Well done!

Trump and his millions of witless minions prove why we are in so much trouble today saw pertains to the loss of individual freedom and our continued march toward authoritarian tyranny — of course the brainwashed one-third of Americans are blind to that fact. So there is no need to try to convince them of anything. They are the true believers much the same as Hitler’s loyalists were true believers even up to the time the gallows sprang beneath their feet.
